Jesus Meets The Stupids
June 11th, 2007 by EdLike the Frankfurter EP before it this album was recorded at Redwood in Camden by Alan Scott. Redwood is owned by members of the Monty Python team and was the Stupids first experience of a ‘big’ studio (outside the BBC sessions).
The band was pretty happy with this release, but it wasn’t received very well in the press. The Stupids were just leaving the ‘let’s build them up…’ phase and were heading straight into ‘…so we can knock ‘em down again’ country. Ironically the press had loved ‘Van Stupid’ - a record the band felt was far inferior.
The cover was again painted by Barry Lee Thorpe. It’s based on a famous painting (Renaissance period?) by a famous artist (Italian?), but as you can see, I’ve forgotten the details. Polaroids were taken of the band and then Barry worked them into the painting. Tommy was heavily involved in the cover concept.

Hi Ed
It’s the Wilton Diptych, which in itself could be a classic John Peel type bandname.

Hi Ed, I saw The Stupids many times back in the day -mainly at the Clarendon , Portsmouth Basins and a few other London venues.
One of the more memorable shows was the tour with the Hard-Ons…both bands were great ( I saw you and the hards at Portsmouth on this one). Which were your fave venues to play? I can remember yourself introducing The hard-ons as ‘ one of the few bands we like to play with..’ any particular bands you disliked? What was the spat with Heresy all about ( I can’t remember now )?
cheers
Simon

Simon, just the odd question then!!
1. Fave venues for me with the Stupids were The Clarendon and the Fulham Greyhound in London. We didn’t do enough gigs to have places we played that frequently. Did a great show in Newcastle once that I remember.
2. Disliked? Probably all of them. We were young and arrogant, and we only listened to AC/DC and Aerosmith
3. Heresy vs Stupids: Ask Tommy and Kalv about that. I honestly don’t remember…perhaps I never even knew at the time. I thought it was ridiculous though, even then.

Hi, Ed
How’s things? Hope you and yours are very well?
The reason I’m getting in touch is because a fella I know is putting together a retrospective of Ipswich music, past and present. I thought it would feel pretty incomplete without some of your stuff on there so I told him I’d try to get in touch about the possibility of a Stupids track, a Chocolate track and a Big Ray track for it? It’s a nice little package, totally non-profit, but professionally pressed. Be great to get some of your tracks on there and make it that bit more comprehensive. Drop me a line and I’ll tell you a little more about it. Hope to hear from you soon.
Take care and all the best
Roki
