Stupids Re-Issues Due End of June

March 14th, 2008 by Ed

Aston Stephens from Boss Tuneage just got in touch via email with news of the Stupids re-issues collection that he’s been co-ordinating since 2005…yep, it’s been a long road, but we thank him for his endeavours :-)

The set will finally be released on 30th June 2008. James Sherry (ex-K-Line drummer and star HC journo) is doing all the liner notes, which is a good thing I think. The other interesting thing is that Sanctuary - who bought the rights to the early Stupids releases from Trojan/Clay who had originally bought them from Manic Ears who bought them from C.O.R….no-one said this was going to make sense!!! - were recently themselves bought by Universal. This means that Aston is licensing all the C.O.R. era releases from Universal! Hah! The Stupids finally make it onto a major…sort of.

I haven’t heard at lot of this stuff for 20 years and I honestly can’t remember half of the songs that the band released on Vinyl Solution so I’m looking forward to the trip down memory lane. Tom has been closely involved with Aston during the time it’s taken to get the stuff put together, so I think it’ll be a really great collection with all boxes ticked. Highlights for me will be hearing the Peel sessions again and also the original Frankfurter 4-track which I definitely remember as being ‘a good thing’.

Packaging-wise CDs will be digipacks with 16 page booklets and “vinyl effect” CDs, the vinyl will be 12″ gatefold sleeves on coloured vinyl. Anyway, here are some headlines about the releases. More details and (hopefully) artwork nearer the time.

Hi Ed, i still have fond memories of Stupids gigs and the early BDS. Although that seems like a lifetime ago, some of my favourite parts of my life, particularly driving all day, getting hot and sweaty then driving all night, God knows how we all did it. There’s alot to be said for enthusiasm. So am I correct thinking you have a child? I believe i saw something on the side of your page last time i looked in, but i’m not an adept when it comes to computers so may be mistaken. Claire would like to know what happened to Marty. Also Stevie Snax, is he around? Course Tommy, or should i say Klute has been in NZ a few times, and i managed to talk to the promoter is all. Actually there’s a huge HC and punk thing going on here right now, we’ve had Peter and TTB, great night, UK Subs, blast from the past and ANL, which we didn’t go to but we are all very excited at the prospect of SLF touring. Actually I probably spend more time listening to the news and current affairs on radio than anything. Anyway that’s probably enough for now. Glad to see you’re still doing it all and Thanks go to Simon Kay in NZ for putting us on to your site, Cheers, Mike, Claire and Jessica [daughter, now 19]

Great to hear from you, Mike! For those not in the know, Mike is a Kiwi who used to live in London and who drove the Stupids on some of the first trips that we did round the UK once the band had more or less relocated to London. By day he was a London bus driver so we felt we were in good hands…and we were. Mike also taught me how to rig the electricity supply in my room at college so that the current bypassed the meter. Saved me a fortune and something I’ll always be eternally grateful for.

man, this set is going to bankrupt me, but i can’t wait! i’ve been in contact with you, ed, sporadically with stupids, bds and chocoloate questions over the years. i’m a huge stupids fan from the u.s. and i’m so excited to finally have those later albums on cd with new liner notes and everything.

but what about the hard-ons “no cheese” split? that might be my favorite record of all time. the artwork, the humor, the songs, the spirit of the whole thing. i guess i’m not sure that a re-issue would capture that without pretty much just being a replica.

Ye, Stevie is still around. He runs a studio in Brighton called 284 which I practice in with my band, Offcuts.
