You Disgust Me: Complete

October 30th, 2009 by Ed

Rich MatthewsI’ve spent 2 years waiting for the final 2 YDM songs to get mixed before posting the whole session here and to date there’s not been any progress, so I’m going to go ahead and post them all anyway. If we get round to mixing the last 2 at any point I’ll update this entry at that point.

Anyway, You Disgust Me was the band that Rich, Paul & I formed after K-Line split up at the very end of 2004. First we got our good friend, Marc ‘Mates’ Maitland from Blocko to plays drums, but he left after 6 months so James Sherry (also from K-Line) agreed to stand in for a while. Unfortunately, James also left after a few rehearsals for a variety of reasons and we essentially called it a day at that point. It’s incredibly deflating working up a set of material with a drummer and then have him leave just as you’re about to start looking for gigs. To have it happen twice in a row is a real kick in the teeth. Anyway, because time was tight for all of us we asked James if he’d at least record the songs that we’d been working on so that we’d have a document of what we’d got up to.

After the recording we looked for a new drummer, but all leads dried up and we knocked it on the head. A great shame as I think some of the material is really strong and I’d have loved to have had the opportunity to play live. It’s really frustrating that my fave song, End Time Gospel, remains unmixed because while the rough mix gives you a feel for the song, there’s a lot missing from this version (especially a load of build-up guitars near the end). Bah! Maybe one day. The one song that didn’t really work for us is Murder In Their Eyes; the verses are OK and so is the breakdown at the end, but we were never really happy with the choruses. All songs written by Ed, Rich & Paul with input from Mates & James. All lyrics by Ed. Warhead is a cover of the 1980 classic from the UK Subs & My Pal is a cover of the similarly classic song from Aussia band, God.

  • Ed Wenn - Vocals, guitar & percussion
  • Rich Matthews - Guitar
  • Paul Duncan - Bass
  • James Sherry - Drums
  • Roop - Backing vocals & percussion
  • John Ruscoe - Slide guitar on ‘Warhead’

The drums were recorded by Rich at 2KHz and the rest was recorded & mixed by Roop in a tiny attic room at Air Lyndhurst. Rich and I have decided to ressurect some of the songs in our new (as of Nov 2009) band, Liquidman, so if you come and see us play expect to hear Edison & Structure.

Liquidman Rises From The Ashes

October 28th, 2009 by Ed

Rich Matthews and I have started up a new band to play on a very intermittent basis in the interests of getting together every now and then to make a racket and have a good time. We’ll primarily be playing a collection of older songs (from Sink mainly, but also some Chocolate, the original Liquidman, You Disgust Me and possibly a couple of K-Line songs to which I wrote the lyrics…although the K-Line is doubtful because I can’t sing like Zac). Rich’s mate Tom (ex of Colour Code) and Damion Rice - my filmwasters.com buddy and ex-Killerest Expression - will be on drums and bass respectively.

The initial idea came about when DS kindly asked me to play an acoustic set as an opener for the ’secret’ Snuff gig in Cambridge back in August. I didn’t fancy doing an acoustic set, but asked if we could do a one-off band thing and play some old songs. DS was up for it so Rich and Tom & I had a couple of rehearsals and opened up the night. We enjoyed it so much and people were so positive about it that we decided to play a few more gigs.

The first one is back at The Portland Arms on Saturday December 19th with Damion joining on bass and Rich switching back to guitar. If you’re interested in seeing us play then get in touch…especially if you can put us on. We have gigs in Leamington Spa and Kingston in the works, but no dates confirmed yet.

[Liquidman history: A few years ago I got together with John Ruscoe and two good friends, Damion & Sid, from The Killerest Expression to knock out a one-off studio project. The new band needed a name so we resurrected Liquidman]

Acoustic Gig: Kingston

October 28th, 2009 by Ed

Josh did us proud and the night was a huge success. I was on my own so no Jacqui on hand to take photos or record any video. I’m trying to track some down though, so something may appear here in the future. I really enjoyed my set & feel I’m finally getting to the point where I can concentrate on the performance rather than freaking out with nerves or concentrating so hard on playing the songs that I forget about trying to entertain. The sound onstage was perfect and that really helped me relax with the vocals. Nice! Duncan was excellent; probably the best I’ve seen him so far.

Sink Video: Live in Switzerland, 1990.

October 3rd, 2009 by Ed

About years ago Graham kindly transferred an old Sink live vid from VHS to DVD for me. The plan was to rip it and get some of the better moments up online. 5 years later and I’ve only just managed the first 2 songs :-) I don’t think there’s any other video of Sink on t’Internet so I hope you enjoy them.

It was a weird gig audience-wise so the performance is fairly low-key (in other words I was sulking!), but it does mean that we actually played the songs pretty well for the most part. The camera was closest to John so you can hear his guitar way louder than mine…again, not a bad thing.

The clip jumps about for the first few seconds, but then settles down.
